Notes From Our Journey
From twenty-six years of building custom homes on Lake Texoma, here we share about our process and what we've learned about design, materials, engineering, and the decisions that shape a home built to last for generations — the questions clients ask us most often, and the answers we give around the table in our design center.
Integrating Outdoor Spaces: The Ceci Bates Approach at Rock Creek

In many homes, the patio often seems like an architectural afterthought. The interior spaces are designed first, with the outdoor area fitting in wherever there’s extra room. This approach can lead to patios that feel disconnected from the living spaces they adjoin, reducing their usability and enjoyment.
Roberth Jordan, our architect at Ceci Bates, envisions outdoor spaces differently. On a recent project at Rock Creek, a client sought a home specifically built for entertaining. This presented an opportunity to redefine the role of the patio. Roberth designed the back patio as the central hub of the home, with intentional connections to every major living area.
In this project, the patio was not simply appended to the home; it served as the home’s organizational core. Each primary room — the master suite, game room, living room, kitchen, and bar — opened onto this vital outdoor space. This design ensures that life flows seamlessly between indoors and outdoors, enhancing the sense of harmony within the home.
By positioning the patio as the focal point from the initial architectural sketches, we created a layout where each room naturally gravitates toward this central, open space. This design philosophy fosters a sense of openness and continuity, allowing activities to move fluidly between inside and outside without interruption.
The most successful custom homes are those where outdoor spaces are thoughtfully integrated from the outset. They are designed in tandem with the rooms they connect to, providing a sense of unity throughout the property.
