Notes From Our Journey

From twenty-six years of building custom homes on Lake Texoma, here we share about our process and what we've learned about design, materials, engineering, and the decisions that shape a home built to last for generations — the questions clients ask us most often, and the answers we give around the table in our design center.

Ensuring Perfect Stain Consistency: A Quiet Mastery

May 21, 2026

Wood is not a uniform material. Each board tells the story of its origin, and this can lead to variations. In a finished kitchen with extensive cabinetry, differences between what was promised and what is delivered can become acutely visible.

Heather Shields, Ceci Bates Custom Homes’ interior designer, understands this deeply. Wood tones vary depending on the specific tree they come from—a piece of oak may exhibit unexpected pink hues. With this variability in mind, when a client selects a stain from a sample board, Heather ensures this selection is only the starting point. She tests multiple stain samples directly on the cabinetry, assessing each to ensure it matches the client’s expectations.

If a discrepancy arises, she doesn’t hesitate to tweak the stain. Adjustments are made until the cabinetry echoes the agreed-upon vision. This meticulous process seldom features in contracts or portfolios. Its success is marked by invisibility; clients only see the right result.

This attention to detail epitomizes the difference between a true custom home and a near-custom one. The unseen adjustments—the small ones nobody would notice if omitted—are what end up defining the project.
