In the world of interior design, many professionals venture through design schools and refine their understanding of construction much later, if at all. The standard is often to know what looks aesthetically pleasing without the complexities of what is feasible when it comes to building, installing, or maintaining those designs.

Heather Shields charted a different course. She began her career with a background in fine art, specifically with an emphasis on studio painting. Her path to interior design was paved through ten transformative years on construction sites in Austin. Working intimately with faux finishing, Venetian plaster, custom murals, scrollwork, and stained cabinetry, she gained firsthand experience in the practicalities of the building process. Each day was spent side-by-side with tradespeople, absorbing the realities of construction.

By the time Heather transitioned into interior design with Ceci Bates, she carried with her a comprehensive understanding of how materials should interact and endure. Her knowledge is not theoretical; it is grounded in practice. She knows how a particular stain truly looks when applied to wood as opposed to a sample chip. She anticipates which tile patterns fit seamlessly and which require an extra hand to achieve the desired effect. This tactile experience has refined her eye for detail, ensuring that her design promises translate into reality at each project stage.

Her practical wisdom is not merely past experience; it is the foundation of her methodical approach to design. She empowers clients to make informed choices by walking them through possibilities with an understanding that few in her profession possess.

Some expertise defies classrooms—it demands the persistence of hands-on work, and Heather Shields embodies this philosophy. Exploring more about the approach and team at Ceci Bates can deepen your appreciation of what truly informed custom home design means. Learn more at cecibates.com.
