Notes From Our Journey

From twenty-six years of building custom homes on Lake Texoma, here we share about our process and what we've learned about design, materials, engineering, and the decisions that shape a home built to last for generations — the questions clients ask us most often, and the answers we give around the table in our design center.

Douglas Fir Trusses: Where Beauty Meets Structure

June 15, 2026

In the world of custom home construction, some materials are selected for their aesthetic appeal, while others are chosen for their structural capabilities. The rarest and most compelling choices occur when a single material excels in both domains. This dual-purpose quality was the driving force behind the choice of Douglas fir trusses in a Ceci Bates project in Tushka, Oklahoma.

The great room in this project takes on proportions reminiscent of a small church, demanding a roof that reaches beyond conventional capabilities. To achieve this, hand-built trusses of Douglas fir were selected. This type of wood is celebrated not only for its inherent strength and supportive capabilities but also for its fine grain and how it gracefully matures with time.

Each truss was constructed with precision offsite, adhering to meticulous specifications. Once built, these elements were transported to the site and positioned by crane, framing the roof in complementary Douglas fir. A custom staining process unified the visual appearance, ensuring that the trusses, framing, and ceiling harmonize as a continuous material narrative. These trusses are not mere decorative elements; they physically hold the roof aloft and serve as the room’s aesthetic anchor.

Crafting such a structure demands a unique blend of expertise. A builder with a profound understanding of wood, a structural engineer capable of validating the trusses’ performance, and a skillful finishing crew adept in matching stains across varied lumber are all crucial. These diverse competencies were seamlessly integrated on this project, a hallmark seldom found in typical home construction.

At Ceci Bates Custom Homes, we believe that the most beautiful materials often fulfill vital structural roles. We invite you to learn more about our approach to materials and craftsmanship at cecibates.com.
