Years ago, during a significant project at Rock Creek, Ceci Bates faced such a moment. The client was deeply dissatisfied with the design produced. They were close to canceling the project and seeking another builder altogether—a potential setback of considerable consequence. At that time, Roberth Jordan was merely drafting plans from overseas, restricted from designing, only executing draft responsibilities.

On the eve of the cancellation meeting, Roberth asked for a chance to intervene. Although limited to drafting, he understood the client’s aspirations intricately, having worked on the project closely enough to sense that another approach could succeed. Granted permission, Roberth worked tirelessly through the night, creating a new design with nothing but his hands and transferring paper.

The following morning, he presented his hand-sketched design. The client’s wife, who once worked in an architect’s office as a teen, recognized the authenticity and effort of the hand-sketched technique. “This is a real architect,” she remarked, appreciating the struggle behind the sketch. It was a moment of recognition and understanding that resonated deeply. The project was saved, leading to the creation of a beloved home.
