Notes From Our Journey

From twenty-six years of building custom homes on Lake Texoma, here we share about our process and what we've learned about design, materials, engineering, and the decisions that shape a home built to last for generations — the questions clients ask us most often, and the answers we give around the table in our design center.

Craftsmanship Elevated: Hand-Built Trusses in Tushka

June 18, 2026

Some homes are designed first and engineered second, while others demand that the two are intertwined from the onset. The most ambitious architectural endeavors often fall into the latter category. They require a foundation of technical precision long before the first visual elements take shape.

On a recent project set on a sprawling thousand-acre property in Tushka, Oklahoma, the marriage of design and engineering created a home where architecture and nature harmonize. This undertaking called for a great room designed with the proportions and vertical grace akin to a small church. Its architectural vision necessitated something extraordinary: a vaulted ceiling soaring high above, free of conventional framing that would obstruct the openness of the space.

Conventional methods could not support the grand roof envisioned for this great room. Instead, it required meticulously hand-built timber trusses, assembled offsite using Douglas fir, crafted to precise specifications. These trusses were not just structural; they were art. With the expert guidance of Bogdan Taut and our engineering team, every structural calculation was carried out with diligence — each connection strategically detailed to distribute the load seamlessly across the intended span.

Transported carefully to the site, these architectural elements were lifted into position, one by one, by a crane. Joined in perfect alignment, they bore the roof’s weight impeccably. The installation was completed with custom-stained Douglas fir, echoing the trusses’ authentic beauty throughout the interior space. Now, the owner enjoys a living space that feels sanctified, where light dances unobstructed and the design speaks to both simplicity and complexity.

Such architectural beauty finds its roots in sound engineering. It’s a dialogue between vision and structural reality. To discover how Ceci Bates integrates design and engineering in our projects, we invite you to explore further at cecibates.com.
